Repel Flies Outdoors
Written on Jun 13, 2026

I would not have believed this water trick would repel flies if I didn't see it happening for myself. Tested with transparent plastic bags outdoors, it may or may not work indoors.
If you place them around the perimeter of your yard, ordinary flies will avoid your yard. I don't know what the science is behind it. Again, I wouldn't have believed it would work until I saw it happening with my own eyes.
Transparent Bags of Water
My wife, Josie, and one of her aunts saw this water trick being used at an outdoor restaurant. They were on vacation on some islands other than Luzon in the Philippines.
She asked one of the other patrons about it, and that patron told her he saw it while on a cruise as well. Josie kept it in mind for an upcoming gathering.
A daytime gathering took place in our back yard months later. Josie had a bunch of our nieces and nephews tie the bags of water along the top of the backyard fence, about a meter from each other. Two sides were completely covered with bags, and part of a third was covered.
The only side that wasn't covered was the side parallel to the backside of the house and the opening next to it, so people could actually enter the back yard. The only place the flies entered the back yard was through that opening.
Millions of Flies
There's a pig slaughterhouse near enough to our house that we can hear the pigs squealing at night when it's otherwise quiet. It's rarely quiet enough with all the dogs barking, cats fighting, and roosters crowing in the neighborhood.
We usually have to deal with millions of flies when food is being cooked or eaten outdoors. I'm sure the slaughterhouse is where most of the flies come from. The fence became a barrier for the flies coming from that direction, at least with this water trick.
Many people were in the back yard that day. They were eating, playing cards, drinking beer, and singing with the karaoke music. The water trick works, and you can take my word for it.
When we had large gatherings like this before, we were constantly killing flies (and shooing away other insects). That particular day, there weren't enough pests to bother anyone. We'll definitely be repeating this technique at our next daytime back yard gathering, whenever that may be (flies don't bother anyone at night).
