Science Fiction

Science fiction is the genre of speculative fiction I enjoy the most. It includes many subgenres, and I can't tell you what subgenre I like the best. I enjoy related genres, but I don't focus on them as much as science fiction.

After marriage and children, I rarely found time to read books. I was an avid reader when I was young, but I haven't read anything new in the last 15 years. Now that I'm a senior citizen, I have difficulty keeping up with movies and video series.

I got hooked on science fiction for a couple of reasons. A couple of my older brothers watched science fiction movies from the 1950s when they aired on television. Reruns of the original "Star Trek" series frequently aired in the 1970s.

I really started enjoying science fiction as a young adult in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. When I wanted entertainment, I wanted it as an escape from reality. I had no desire to watch things that mirrored or emphasized reality as we know it.

Video Series

You should notice, in this article and others, that I prefer to use the term "video series" instead of "television series", even if a series airs on broadcast television. You can now watch video series from the past and present on smartphones, tablets, and personal computers.

I thought of creating a list of all the video series I've watched, but it wouldn't be accurate. Besides, I would have to scan a dozen or more Wikipedia pages just to remember the correct titles.

Here are some video series I'm following on various streaming services:

As you can see, there aren't many. Also, I tend to wait until a season is complete before binge-watching that season over a few days. I've watched many complete series after they finished, when they eventually became available on one service or another.

Movies

I watched many movies at drive-in theaters as well as indoor theaters before getting married in 1985. The number I've watched outside of home has seriously dwindled over the years.

My family watched many movies on cable TV in the 80s and 90s, with cable services such as HBO, Showtime, and The Movie Channel. When streaming services started picking up, we stopped watching anything on cable TV.

Now that my wife, Josie, and I live alone, we rarely watch movies. It has to be something we both want to watch before we'll bother going to a movie theater. Even then, we often invite two or more nieces and nephews.

The only movie we watched in a movie theater after the pandemic was over was "Deadpool & Wolverine" in 2024. Since then, there hasn't been anything that we couldn't wait for on streaming services.
